The short answer
Taurine is one of the most abundant amino acid compounds in your body and plays an important role in muscle function, hydration, heart health, nervous system function and exercise performance. While your body can make taurine on its own, some people — particularly those eating little or no animal foods, or undertaking heavy training — may have lower taurine levels.
Although taurine isn’t a miracle supplement, research suggests it may help support exercise performance, recovery and overall health when paired with a balanced diet and training plan.

What exactly is taurine?
Despite often being grouped with amino acids, taurine is a little different. Unlike the amino acids that build muscle protein, taurine isn’t incorporated into proteins. Instead, it acts more like a helper molecule throughout the body, supporting a wide range of physiological processes. It’s found in particularly high concentrations in skeletal muscle, the heart, the brain and the retina (eyes).
Your liver and other tissues can produce taurine from the amino acids cysteine and methionine, provided you have enough of the nutrients involved in the process, including vitamin B6. Because healthy adults usually produce taurine naturally, it’s considered conditionally essential rather than essential — your body can normally make enough, but certain life stages or circumstances may increase requirements or reduce production.

Recent animal studies have generated excitement after showing taurine supplementation improved several markers associated with healthy ageing and lifespan in some species. However, these findings have not been confirmed in humans. At this stage, it’s accurate to say taurine is an exciting area of longevity research — but it’s far too early to describe it as an anti-ageing supplement.
Can you get enough taurine from food?
Yes — if you regularly eat animal foods. Good dietary sources include beef, lamb, chicken, fish, shellfish and dairy products.
